How to Texture Canvas for Acrylic Painting

Ready to add some depth and texture to your acrylic paintings? In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use modeling paste (also known as moulding paste) to create three different textured canvas pieces. These techniques are perfect for abstract art, and the best part is, you can use simple, inexpensive items from around your home!

Why Add Texture?

Texture can bring your abstract paintings to life, adding volume and dimension to your artwork. Using modeling paste is an easy and cost-effective way to achieve this, and because it dries quickly, you can start painting on your textured canvases the same day!

What We’ll Cover:

  • Three different texture techniques using household items like onion bags, orange bags, and hard netting.
  • How to apply modeling paste to your canvas and layer it for interesting effects.
  • Tips for working quickly, since modeling paste dries fast—especially if you’re using mesh for texture.

Bonus Tip from Dad: Keep in mind you must work QUICKLY. When using mesh, make sure to remove it before the modeling paste dries, or it’ll stick permanently to the canvas. Modeling paste (moulding paste) is a type of glue and is an acrylic based medium. ⚠️ DON’T let this medium dry with the mesh still on it, or it won’t come off.

But don’t worry, the fast drying time is actually a huge benefit—it allows you to create multiple textured canvases at once!
