At our art school, damaged brushes are something we deal with far too often. From frizzy bristles to bent-out-of-shape tips, it’s not uncommon to end up with a bunch of busted paintbrushes after a few sessions — especially after our lively Kids and Teens classes!

So when Jess came across a viral paint brush hack on YouTube, she had to test it out. The promise? With just some boiling water, soap, and a bit of time, you can fix those damaged synthetic acrylic brushes and make them usable again. Sounds too good to be true, right?

The Paint Brush Hack

The method seemed simple enough: dunk the frizzy brush heads into boiling water, clean them with soap, and reshape them. Maybe this work wonders for brushes that have seen better days?

Did It Work?

Well, we don’t want to spoil the fun entirely (you’ll have to check out the video to see the full process), but let’s just say I’m not totally convinced it’s worth the effort — at least for our situation. As an art school, we have tons of brushes, and the time required to go through this process for all of them seems a bit much. Plus, the results weren’t quite as magical as we had hoped.

The Key Takeaway? Prevention!

Instead trying to salvage damaged brushes, the best thing you can do is prevent them from getting wrecked in the first place. Clean your brushes thoroughly after each use, reshape them while they’re still wet, and store them properly.
