Choosing the right paper is just as important as choosing the right pencil or paintbrush. With so many different types of art paper available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But don’t worry! In this video, Jess dives into the types of paper you can use for various art techniques and what makes each one unique.
When buying paper for your art, it’s important to consider the purpose, size, and the medium you’ll be using. Do you need paper that can handle thick layers of paint? Or are you looking for something with texture for drawing?
Jess covers it all in this video! Whether you’re working with watercolours, acrylics, oils, or pencils, we’ll help you choose the best paper for your artwork.
Key Things to Consider When Choosing Art Paper:
- Purpose: Know the medium you’ll be using (e.g., paint, graphite, ink) and choose a paper designed to handle it.
- Size: Think about the scale of your artwork and the final piece.
- Thickness: Some techniques, like watercolour or heavy acrylics, need thicker paper to prevent warping.
- Texture: Do you want a smooth surface for detailed drawings or a textured one for added depth?

Best Paper for Different Mediums:
- Drawing & Sketching: Look for smooth paper with a bit of tooth, we recommend 110 gsm or higher.
- Watercolour: Opt for watercolour paper that is thick and absorbent.
- Acrylic: Use heavyweight paper designed to hold multiple layers of paint without buckling.
- Oil Painting: While canvas is the most commonly used material for oil painting (if you want to paint on paper) look specifically for canvas paper designed for oil painting.
